THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY

The Man Who Knew Infinity

PG-13 | 1h 48min | Biography, Drama
Thursday, June 28, 6:30 p.m.

Director: Matt Brown
Starring: Dev Patel, Jeremy Irons, Malcolm Sinclair

Dr. Harsh Mathur

  • Professor of Quantum Physics, Case Western Reserve University
  • Research: phenomena in matter, particle physics, astrophysics, cosmology
  • Completed undergraduate studies in India, where he grew up; earned advanced degrees at Yale University
  • Worked at Bell Laboratories and the Institute for Theoretical Physics

The true-life story told by The Man Who Knew Infinity “is one of the most romantic stories in the history of mathematics,” says the U.S. Naval Academy website.

"Unfortunately, it’s the early 20th century, and there are those who refuse to take a 25-year-old Indian shipping clerk (Srinivasa Ramanujan played by Dev Patel)  seriously as a mathematical genius," says the St. Louis Dispatch. "But Ramanujan only needs one person to help take him to the next level—and he finds that champion in G.H. Hardy (Jeremy Irons), a British mathematics professor who, unlike some of his frankly bigoted peers, doesn’t have a problem with the idea that the self-taught Ramanujan might well be a formidable scholar."

"This is not so much a film about understanding the numbers," says the Chicago Sun Times, " but understanding the men who made us see their merit, and the passion that drives each of us to find the true meaning in our lives. And that is a worthy lesson indeed."

"MOUNTAIN MUSE" OPENING RECEPTION AT SWEETWATER CENTER FOR THE ARTS

Saturday, June 23, 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Join us for the Opening Reception of Mountain Muse

with live music by Amy Melissen.

There is a long history of creativity and craft making in the Appalachian Mountain region. Traditional crafts have thrived among its residents since the first settlements emerged. Today there are many artists living and working in the region who continue to use traditional processes and techniques but choose to create contemporary works that reflect current concepts and aesthetics. These works establish a dialog between the rich and heavy history of the media and object itself, with the concepts revealed through the works. Mountain Muse will bring together contemporary works in traditional media by artists who reside in the Appalachian Mountain Region.

Mountain Muse is curated by Alexandra Watrous with the generous support of The Pittsburgh Foundation.
